| What is SOA? SOA
is an informal singles club for adults over the age of 21 with a focus
on outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, camping, bicycling,
rafting, and canoeing. The variety of activities is limited only to the
interests of the volunteer leaders.
Cost? The annual membership fee is $24, or $12 after June 1. Dues of $24 paid after October include membership for the following year. Membership includes 12 monthly newsletters which describe the upcoming activities and invitations to the summer picnic and the winter party. Nonmembers may attend up to three SOA events before deciding whether to join. All participants in an activity are expected to share equally in the cost of the activity. Traveling expenses, equipment rentals, and admission fees are the most common event related expenses.
Experience: SOA offers a variety of activities for outdoor enthusiasts whose experiences range from beginner to veteran. To ensure your safety and enjoyment, always consult the trip leader to inquire about the level of experience required for a particular event.
Trip Leaders: Trip leaders are recruited strictly on a volunteer basis. Members are encouraged to contribute to SOA by leading (or co-leading) at least one event per year. Individuals leading four or more events during their membership year are rewarded with a free membership for the following year.
Participation: To reserve your space, call the trip leader before 9PM at least a few days in advance. SOA trips often fill quickly. Participants carpool from a central location. (Usually a "park and ride" lot.) The trip leader will inform you of the meeting place, time, and any additional information that you will need concerning the activity. Remember to bring plenty of water, food, and any other necessities. If you are not able to attend the event after you have committed, call the trip leader as a courtesy. Most leaders will wait 15 minutes before they leave for the event. Please do not bring children or pets on events unless the description of the event specifically states that they are welcome.
Level of Fitness: To make your outdoor experiences more enjoyable, SOA offers a terrain rating system for you to use, along with the pace and distance. This will help you gauge the suitability of the event. These ratings are relative to your level of fitness.
Easy generally flat to slight elevation change
Moderate some significant elevation change
Strenuous- frequent challenging elevation change
If you are not certain about your ability, call the trip leader and
discuss the trail with him/her to determine if the activity is suitable
for you.
Local Hikes: Local hikes include Stone Mountain, the Chattahoochee River Parks, Kennesaw Mountain, Red Top Mountain, and other nearby areas. For these hikes, you should bring water, but not necessarily food. The trip leader will provide details.
Day Hikes: Most day hikes are all -day events, which involve meeting in the morning, forming carpools, and driving for 1-3 hours to the trailhead and return in the evening. Many of these hikes end with a dinner in a town near the trailhead. Remember to bring water, lunch, and money for gas and dinner. Again, the trip leader will advise you of the necessary details.
Overnight Trips: Some leaders plan overnight outings. These are usually fee- based events and the leader may ask for money in advance. The trip leader will gladly give you a breakdown of expenses. Do not expect a refund if you cancel at the last minute and are not able to be replaced.
Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing suitable for the activity and weather. You are advised to bring a towel and a change of clothing for the ride home. In the summer, wear lightweight clothing that breathes. For "wet" hikes, wear a bathing suit under your clothing. In the winter, dress in layers. Polypro and other synthetics are great for winter hiking because they wick moisture away from the body to keep you warm.
Hiking boots or shoes are highly recommended because they provide more
protection and support than athletic shoes. A hat provides ventilation, as
well as shading from the sun in the summer, and provides warmth in the
winter. Bring a type of pack to hold your belongings when hiking.
Weather: If the weather forecast seems threatening, your trip leader will decide whether to proceed with the hike. If they are going to cancel, they will call you to let you know. Most leaders will try to go, for rain in Atlanta does not necessarily mean rain at the trailhead. If you have questions, call the leader.
Insects and Sunburn: Always bring insect repellent in the spring, summer, and fall. If you are allergic to bee stings, bring your medication. Inform your leader if you have special health issues. Most leaders will have a basic first aid kit, but may not have items for special needs. Sunscreen is important year round.
Socials and Parties: SOA has socials monthly at an area restaurant. It is a time to meet, mingle, and to socialize. Members will answer questions that you might have, and current calendars will be available. Check the website or current calendar for the date, location and time of the social. Individuals are responsible for their own food and drinks. SOA has a summer picnic and a winter party that are free to members.
