  AWARDS FOR EVENT LEADING!

Anyone who leads an outdoor hiking, camping, fishing, biking, canoeing, kayaking, rafting or rock climbing event in 2010 will get $30 towards joining the Friends of Georgia State Parks, (valued at $45), which includes a yearly Parks Pass. (Leading events such as concerts, movies, restaurant dinners or dances count as leading half of an event, since they are not core outdoor adventures. Having a dinner or games night at your house does count as a full event, since that is a lot of work.)

If you lead a second event, you will get an additional $15 for a total of $45 which will enable you to join the Friends of Georgia State Parks for free: Click here to join.

See the link for an explanation of the full benefits of membership. You will see that there are a number of perks, such as a free night's stay at a State Park Campground.

Release and waiver form:

You must return the waiver form (click link to download) with signatures of participants (not just a list in your handwriting) in order to receive credit.  For indoor events, you do not have to have an emergency contact, but we still need the list of signatures. Please be sure that the column indicating member/non-member has been checked for each attendee.  Don't forget to fill out the back of the form with your name and event information (we can't assign credit if we don't know who led!) and finally, keep a copy for yourself.  Thanks for your cooperation!

Call (770) 220-9587 or email info@singlesoutdooradventures.org for more information!

THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORTS IN KEEPING THE SOA CALENDAR FULL!

TRIP LEADER CHECKLIST

A few guidelines to keep our leader effort consistent and strong!

The information below is geared towards hiking, but is not intended to be limited to that activity only.

Before the event:

·         Have you scouted the trail/area and do you know it?

·         Are you going to have someone sweep?

·         Do you know where you are going to stop for a bathroom/breakfast stop, for breaks on the trail, lunch on the trail and for dinner afterwards (if applicable)?

·         Do you have some basic first aid to take with you?

The phone calls & emails:

·         Meeting time & place

·         Try to return call/emails within 24 hours

·         Identify new hikers and make sure they are prepared

·         Make sure everyone knows what to bring (food, water, rain gear, etc.), and make sure they know what to expect, especially if it’s an unusual outing (trail with water crossings, steep rocks, etc.)  Be prepared to describe the trail

·         What’s the bad-weather plan?

·         Know how to direct someone to the meeting place from all areas in Atlanta.

At the meeting place:

·         Introductions!

·         Hand out written directions (that you know to be accurate) to the drivers.  Please do not rely on caravans; cars get separated and those who are new to the area may get lost and never make it to the trailhead.  Directions should be written so that the driver can get to both the bathroom/breakfast stop and the trailhead independently of the group

·         Go over the general plan, even if you’ve provided written information (where the bathroom/breakfast stop will be, how long you plan to stay there, etc.)

·         Organize the carpool

·         Remind riders to pay drivers – recommend an amount ($4 - $5, depending on distance), to keep it fair.  Don’t make drivers ask for it

·         Talk about dinner plans before you leave the meeting spot.  Depending on where you’ve planned dinner (in-town or out), some participants may not want to stay and will need to know the plan before you leave, when carpool arrangements are being made.

·         Ask drivers to keep an eye out for those who are riding in their car.

During the event:

·         Remind everyone to let someone know if they are leaving the trail

·         Periodic head count - don’t take any turns without the whole group!

·         Remind drivers again to keep an eye out for those who are riding in their car.

·         Don’t forget to bring some basic first aid with you.

After the event:

·         Mail in the filled-out waiver form to: SOA, PO Box 888238, Atlanta, GA30356.

Please let any board member know if you have any questions.

Meeting Locations

Directions to our typical meeting locations are below.  We usually wait around outside of our cars and have a quick group meeting before leaving.  We usually carpool to the trail head.  Drivers are compensated for gasoline by the riders in their car, usually $3-$5 depending on the distance.

greet and we carpool to the trailhead.

From the north, exit at Indian Trail (Exit 101).  The Park & Ride lot has an entrance off of the exit ramp.  Turn left into the lot.  The entrance will be before the traffic signal light.
